Gender Differentiation using Maxillary Sinus
نویسنده
چکیده
Identification is necessary for humanitarian and emotional reasons and for many legal issues, particularly for family members. In recent reports, identification based on dental information is considered to be highly efficient, reliable, and rapid.4-7 Although many methods are followed for gender differentiation and age estimation, still identification of skeletal remains and decomposed bodies remains a difficult task in forensic medicine. Generally, bones, such as skull, pelvis, and long bones, are used for gender identification. Unfortunately, most of the times, these bones may be in a fragmented or in incomplete state.8 Hence, denser bones like maxillary sinus or zygomatic bone can be utilized for gender determination. It is noted that although skull and other bones are badly disfigured, maxillary sinus appears to be intact.8-10 Hence, it is necessary to look into the other areas of skeleton for identification of gender when the conventional methods are inconclusive. Maxillary sinus is the largest paranasal sinus, which is pyramidal in shape, situated in the body of the maxilla.11 Analysis of shape and dimension of maxillary sinus has been applied for estimation of age, gender differentiation, and also in identification of ethnic groups.8,9,12,13 Within our study, we aimed to check the reliability and accuracy of using dimensions of maxillary sinus on lateral cephalogram for gender determination.

Evaluating the Distance between Posterior Teeth and the Maxillary Sinus Floor Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography
Background and Objectives The topography of the sinus floor and its relationship with maxillary teeth roots varies with age, pneumatization size and grade, positioning of the teeth, and Genetics. This study used cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to evaluate the distance between posterior teeth and the maxillary sinus floor in patients in Rafsanjan City, Iran. Materials and Methods This de...
متن کاملCephalometric Analysis for Gender Determination Using Maxillary Sinus Index: A Novel Dimension in Personal Identification
Purpose. Radiography is important in forensic odontology for the identification of humans. The maxillary sinus is the largest of the paranasal sinuses and first to develop. Sinus radiography has been used for identification of skeletal remains and determination of gender. Hence, the aim and objectives of the present study were to establish a new method for gender determination using maxillary s...
متن کامل3D Evaluation of Maxillary Sinus Using Computed Tomography: A Sexual Dimorphic Study
Purpose. Gender determination is considered to be an important step in the reconstruction of the biological profile in forensic medicine. Maxillary sinus can be used for identification of sex when other methods are indecisive. Computed tomography (CT) provides an excellent method for examining maxillary sinuses. Hence the aim of the study was to determine the accuracy of gender determination us...
متن کاملA Three Dimensional Computed Tomography (3D-CT): A Study of Maxillary Sinus in Malays
Volume Objective: To study the size of the maxillary sinus which includes linear and volume measurements. Methods: Three dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) images of 144 Malays (288 maxillary sinuses) with no clinical evidence of craniofacial and maxillary sinus abnormalities were selected. The subjects aged from 0.4 to 30 years (mean = 13.7 ; SD = 8.53), underwent the CT scanning using Ge...
متن کاملThe relation between frontal sinus dimension and maxillary and mandibular prognathism/retrognathism among Iranian youth and adults
Abstract Introduction: Estimating the appropriate time for orthodontic treatment is a crucial factor. Given the earlier maturation of sinuses rather than maxillomandibular growth, finding the exact relationship between the growth of the jaws and frontal sinuses is considered to be a helpful element in Orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive-analytical study, conduc...
